Over onze klant

Our client is the investment banking part of one of the largest banks in the world. Today, they are starting up a Head office in Amsterdam as a result of the Brexit.

In this new position, you will assist and rapport directly to the CEO and the General Counsel. The Senior Legal Officer is required to oversee and manage the legal activities within Amsterdam and London. This position requires regular travel to London.

Taken en verantwoordelijkheden

* To provide strategic legal advice to the Managing Board and, when necessary, the Supervisory Board;

* To work closely with the legal teams to facilitate the delivery of appropriate legal advice and transaction and documentation support (internal and external) and ensure legal risk is managed appropriately;

* To deliver the legal strategy for the company, working with stakeholders and legal colleagues to ensure the timely, effective and efficient delivery of all issues, projects and initiatives;

* To develop an appropriate legal risk environment, including establishing and maintaining legal policies and procedures;

* To oversee major transactional matters, contentious matters, investigations and corporate activity and, where necessary, assisting with communications with all relevant regulators, and providing related legal advice;

* To establish and maintain appropriate litigation reporting and handling procedures;

* To manage relations with the external counsel and the legal budget;

* To fulfil second line of defence responsibilities for the businesses in Amsterdam and branch offices;

* Key relationships / stakeholders are the CEO and other members of the Managing Board, Head of Corporate Governance & Regulatory Affairs, Head of Compliance & Conduct, heads of product desks in Amsterdam and branch offices, Business Leads in branch offices and members of the Legal management team;

* The role holds a dual reporting line to the CEO and the General Counsel.

Risk and Control

* Comply with the Clients 'Code and all policies, and deliver against all relevant statutory, regulatory, supervisory and legal obligations;

* Proactively identify and effectively manage and/or escalate conduct risk to deliver key customer outcomes.

Defence Risk Management

* 2LOD - Oversight & Control;

* Own and develop the legal risk and control mechanisms for the business to use to discharge its responsibilities, independently overseeing and challenging effective management of risks and controls within agreed risk appetites;

* Provide expert support, advice, management information and escalation to leaders and the business on risk management;

* This role also has standard accountabilities for management & supervision within legal.

Business Delivery

* To manage external advisers and other stakeholders in successfully delivering legal support on a timely basis;

* To deliver expert, accurate and cost effective legal advice to ensuring it is readily understandable to non-lawyers, delivered within relevant timescales, is commercial and proactive and manages / minimizes legal risks;

* To strive for continuous improvements in the operating practices and processes, including identifying efficiencies, improvements and opportunities to reduce costs;

* To manage and deliver the communication of internal and external legal advice and input on transactions and projects to stakeholders in a commercial, user friendly and efficient manner;

* To be responsible for managing legal costs through the use of Ebilling, auctions and other cost tools and for driving a culture of disciplined cost management and controls;

* To help the General Counsel and other members of the legal team build and manage the legal team to attain high performance standards, with a focus on development opportunities and proactive succession planning;

* To ensure all new joiners working with the company receive appropriate induction, training and management.

Profiel

  • Our client is located in Amsterdam, the Netherlands and the role requires residency in the Netherlands, and regular travel to London and to the branch network;
  • Fluency in Dutch and English (written and oral);
  • Solicitor or barrister with at least 7 years' experience. Dutch legal qualification is preferred;
  • Strong leadership and interpersonal skills;
  • Ability to become a trusted advisor to senior executives;
  • Strong stakeholder management and influencing skills across all levels of a complex organization;
  • Ability to establish and maintain strong relationships with the businesses and other legal colleagues;
  • Ability to recognize issues of strategic, legal or reputational importance and evaluate / direct how they should be addressed / resolved;
  • Ability to keep up to date with and share relevant legal and market developments;
  • In-depth knowledge of general banking law and practice and the financial services industry.
  • Expert knowledge of the investment banking activities and products;
  • In-depth understanding of the commercial environment within our client operates;
  • Significant experience in the financial services industry with a track record of stakeholder management.
